All-New X-Men #27

Now this one’s interesting. Bendis kill me because #26 was focussed on drama, feelings, the shattered team dynamics. This one? Not so much. Non-stop action and revelations.

The Charles Xavier from the future Brotherhood? Mystique’s child with Charles Xavier. I still don’t know exactly how that works.. And Raze is his half brother, the child of Mystique and Wolverine. Raze had been parading as his mother long after she had died. Weird. Raze has also shifted into the form of X-23 and infiltrated the New Xavier School. It happens fast, one of the Cuckoos, Mindee, is under future Jean/Xorna’s control. Future Cyclops delays the Brotherhood with a giant laserbeam.

Kitty, Beast, Angel, Magik, Eva, Iceman and Christopher are all fighting Raze (who’s bringing the mindfuck) while being psychicly tortured by Xorna and CX. Young Jean, Emma Frost and Cyclops are trying to get over to the others without being tracked.

Young Jean: “We should call for help.”

Emma Frost: “We would but everybody hates us.”

The Future Brotherhood’s heavy hitters infiltrate Young Jean’s psychic shield and Emma knocks her out. Cyclops is not pleased.

In the final panel we see Xavier confronting Young Jean, saying that he knows now that she’s the biggest threat and she’ll be dealt with first.

BotA is STILL wreaking havoc.Bendis is still killing me with his weird acing and cliffhangers. I love it. Stuart Immonen is a great artist. In the past some of the fight scenes have been convoluted, but this issue was amazing. Even with the shapeshifting villain it was easy to keep up with.

Battle of the Atom Chapter 10

Or X-Men Battle of the Atom #2

SHIELD “has unleashed” a hail storm of bombs at ALL the past present and future X-Men (and Future Brotherhood) ensuring that here at Cape Citadel, where the X-Men were born, that some of them will die.

Image

SHIELD tries to regain control of their firing systems as the first flurry of bombs drop. Xorn/Jean and Xavier are behind this, of course, Quentin Quire, AKA Kid Omega AKA the Phoenix knows what’s up and confronts the telekinetics from the Future Brotherhood. Future Beast is still trying to convince everyone that the attacks from SHIELD are genuine but no one seems to care.

But one missile holds Sentinels. So now SHIELD’s “anti-mutant ordinance” is exposed. When they realize what this means, convictions waiver. Future Beast is the first casualty.

Quentin accuses future Jean of blaming the Phoenix for going all “dark and psycho.” She’s all “you don’t deserve that power, it’s calling my name.”

Future Jubilee (who has lazer Wolverine claws) goes after Raze. She gets cheap shotted by the Sentinel. Shogo rushes in to destroy the robot. Colossus gets destroyed from the inside out by Xavier. Illyana goes all Darkchilde after seeing what has happened to her brother and her friends try to tell her to reign it in. Future Iceman is horrified by the X-Men on X-Men violence. Wolverine and Cyclops are attempting to take out Future Jean/Xorn and they are still squabbling over Who’s girl Jean is before the two men face off against her. She’s furious and barely holding herself together, becoming overwhelmed by her powers.

To save Wolverine and Cyclops the original X-Men intervene. Young Jean reminds her future self that they TRIED to go home. She doesn’t need to do this. As future Jean self destructs, Xavier calls the Brotherhood to him. She explodes taking the Sentinels with her.

Maria Hill reaches the ground but there is no living- or dead to be found.

Epilogue 1- Magik got them out, she kept from losing herself. Wolverine is still hardlining sending the original X-Men home (They tried to go home! did you all forget that?!). Of course the 5 X-Men from the past aren’t the only of the time displaced. There are still the bunch that Illyana transported from the future, though, they are down a few. Cyclops reminds everyone that SHIELD “tried to kill them” (which they should have thought the Brotherhood was behind, but the real issue) that they had Sentinels.

Epilogue 2- Kymera (Storm’s daughter from the future) wants to stay in the present time to fight the Brotherhood. Shogo from the future and present day Jubes have a heart to heart (his mom, her future self is dead, remember?) She asks questions that she probably shouldn’t about how she deals with vampirism, but is mainly just happy that it all works out. That she adopted a son and raised him as an X-Men and it all worked out (after the very strange beginning, what with him being inhabited by an alien virus that could control technology and was bent on controlling the earth).

Epilogue 3- The X-Men from the future -sans Kymera- depart.

Epilogue 4- Kitty Pryde quits the Jean Grey School. She tells off Ororo, lashes out at Iceman and stuns Rachel, Wolverine and the rest. She and the original X-Men defect to Cyclops and the Charles Xavier School.

After seeing Kitty Pryde relegated to the back burner by Storm in Brian Wood’s X-Men series, I was glad to see her take a hardline, I’m interested to see how this will impact the team dynamics in that series going forward. I’m sad about future Jubilee. Wolverine and Cyclops facing off on issues from the self-righteous to the teenage are very real. The art in this particular issue was not my favorite (what was up with Emma Frost? and some characters faded into the background while they were still fighting leaving it difficult to decipher what was happening). But as a whole this crossover event was monumentally entertaining, funny, epic and bad ass. I enjoyed that Illyana was the one to save the day. There wasn’t a huge resolution, the young original X-Men are still displaced and now they have to deal with the fall out of the 5 plus Kitty Pryde defecting.

Battle of the Atom- Chapters 8 and 9

I’m so behind on these! Sorry comic book fans!!

But I’m back and ready to review the final chapters of these time travellers’ antics.

Chapter 7 ended with Wolverine in peril, his regenerative ability is lost and is dying at the hands of his very blue son from the future (which I can only assume is a child with Mystique, since he’s blue and a shapeshifter).

Battle of the Atom chapter 8 AKA Uncanny X-Men #13

By page 2 I’m already baffled, Psylocke who was kicking all their asses just last issue has joined up with the IceHulk and Xavier/Xavier’s grandson?! But wait, it was it’s really Wolverine’s son, Raze, that everyone thought was old Kitty Pryde! He takes two of the original X-Men (young Henry McCoy and Iceman) in order to send them back in time.

Epic fighting ensues between the mutant crews. Xavier calls Krakoa, the island who walks like a man, to swallow up Cyclops, future Jubilee, Magneto, etc.

With all the original X-Men in one place they start up the time cube. Jean sheds a tear for her younger self and they prepare to send everyone back to the past. Until Magik storms in, but Jean and Raze threaten to make short work of her. Jean tries to get her to kill herself, with the quip thrown in, “Spoiler, you’re going to eventually.”

But the time cube is not working! Raze gives it a test run, but it doesn’t work for the originals. Future Beast’s idea is that their “younger selves have created such a complicated space/time paradox by coming here and staying here that the normal laws of space and time no longer apply to them.”

The best part is future Jean Grey’s look of shock and horror and utter confusion.

Not my favorite issue by a long shot, but there were great fight scenes with Ilyana. There were dozens of X-Men running around and I still don’t know what happened to Wolverine. And none of my girls from my fave X-Men book showed up!

Image

This is an AMAZING cover! Look at all the action!!

Cyclops gets mindf^$ked by future Jean Grey in the Xorn mask. It’s good writing. Cyclops, Magik, future Jubilee, Emma Frost and such infiltrate the Jean Grey school and attempt to find the future X-Men who are really the future Brotherhood. But Cyclops runs into Wolverine, Jubes + Shogo, Rachel, Psylocke, Rogue, et al. Wolverine is okay somehow! I mean, I figured he would be, but how?!

After finding out that no one is as they seem, Kitty and the others get suspicious and Jubilee says, “They’re the good guys, they have to be. I mean, look at them. One of them is me.” Beast refutes that, since he was recently betrayed by his future self. And Kitty’s future self was really a shapeshifter who attacked Wolverine. And Iceman has 2 future incarnations with 2 completely different agendas.

Wolverine’s rant settles the matter, “Wiccan there saved me. Healed me after I got gutted by …by a son I’m apparently gonna have some day… …with Mystique. I am never having sex again. And they’re right. We don’t have time for this.

SHIELD is tracking time anomalies that are centered around the Jean Grey school. Agent Dazzler (who was to be the first mutant president and the ensuing backlash drove Xorn/Jean Grey, future Beast, etc to go back to the past). But the future Brotherhood and Original X-Men attack the Cape Citadel military base!

They purposely chose this location to draw out the millions of other X-Men. After a cursory fight with human soldiers, the others show up.

Angel: “I’m so confused. Which side are we even fighting on now?”

Most of them start fighting their future selves or future children. The art here is hilarious and epic. The Brotherhood is hopelessly outnumbered and defeat is almost certain …until SHIELD Commander Maria Hill shows up with droves of agents and breaks up the party.

SHIELD “loses control” of the weapons systems on the helicarriers and all X-Men are threatened.

Battle of the Atom Chapter 7

Or X-Men #6

My fave X-Men book. I have been enjoying the crossover, but this series in particular is the reason I’m reading about all these mutants! Exciting!

Image

This cover is not incredibly exciting. The issue was good, though.

Jubilee wakes up to a screaming Shogo and Bling! who made Shogo a device that corresponds to Jubilee’s telemetrics tries to talk to Jubes about her feud with Mercury. But she gets interrupted… again. This time by Rachel, Rogue and Wolverine returning to the Jean Grey school. Wolverine asks Rachel to spy on the future X-Men. Which seems too late since Jean/Xorn is ready to throw young Jean, young Scott and young Angel in the time cube.

But young Beast and young Iceman are gone! (Last issue they bugged out with Magik to the distant future and then met up with present day Cyclops)  This is not new that Xavier’s grandson takes well and he directs his intense rage at Bling! WTF! Wolverine steps in. During the commotion Rachel is able to interlope and finds that the future X-Men are all freaking wrong… and future Kitty Pryde proves to be… Wolverine’s son…

WOW

All Hell breaks loose.

And Jubilee throws her baby at Rogue and Psylocke (who says “Eep!”) and screams “I hate when telepaths fight ‘cuz I have no idea what’s going on! But I’m blaming you, ‘cuz I don’t like you anyway!” She bares her fangs and lunges at Xavier’s grandson! YES!

Ice Hulk fling Jubilee into the ceiling.

Psylocke (still holding Shogo) swings a 90 pound mace at Ice Hulk.

Rachel psychically fights Xavier and is successful until Molly cracks her over the head.

Side note- Wolverine is missing his healing factor? WHAAAAAAT?

Jubilee, from the roof yells “Shogo! Push the beep-beep!” and Shogo gets put in a bubble so that Psylocke can fight Deadpool, then Jubes, her baby and Bling! run off. 3 of the 5 original are being held by Xorn/Jean and future Beast, Kitty, Storm, Beast and Bobby are also captive after Xorn/Jean’s psychic attack. The school gets locked down so that the real future X-Men can’t show up.

And they do …obviously, along with Cyclops and Emma Frost.

Pretty much all of these issues have had a huge WTF moment at the end… this one is no exception.

We’re getting towards the end. 3 more left in the cross over. Things that made no sense: Everyone stood around and watched while “Xavier’s grandson” (who is actually young Charles Xavier from the future… ummmm) beat up on Bling!? What? Rachel, Rogue, Psylocke and Jubilee (who made Bling the #2 in charge of Shogo) watched?! Umm… no, that doesn’t sound likely.

Thanks to Rogue’s interaction with IceHulk we know that no one is driving that bus.

Why is Wolverine’s son blue? Did Wolverine and Mystique have a child? I have no idea what’s going on here. Please help me out…

Battle of the Atom Chapter 6

Or All New X-Men # 17

Waaaaay wayyyy in the future, Disco Dazzler is elected first mutant president. Disco made a comeback and future trio of  Beast, Kitty and Jean have orchestrated her candidacy.

Image

and then monsters come out of the sky and fling fireballs at her.

Even further in the future; Magic, young Iceman, and young Beast show up. Magic sees her brother (he has her sword… so she’s probably dead… which she probably shouldn’t know about.

Of course, the X-Men that they have run into are not amused at them being there. “We understand why you are here and I understand how frustrating it must be… but you are making it worse!” (One of these way future X-Men is Jubilee… who is calling herself ‘Wolverine’? Wowzers.)

Phoenix: “But that’s what we do, We’re the X-Men! We make things worse!”

Truer words have never been spoken. X-Men are all over the place right now.

Beast, so disheartened by the execution of Disco Dazzler and constantly fighting for a society that hates mutants… leaves the X-Men. Beast, Kitty Pryde and Xorn/Jean are no longer X-Men.

Bobby is a wizard in the future… everyone is confused. How is he a Wizard in the future and an Ice Hulk walking around in the past?

Image

“I need someone to sit down with me and draw a flow chart explaining exactly what’s happening here.”

-The new X-Men at the Xavier Secret School know my pain.

HAHAHAHAHA OMG the ending on this one killed me. I seriously hate crossovers, and the last couple issues bugged me… but this one was great. Hair pullingly ridiculous and amazing.

Cyclops and Emma Frost are licking their wounds after the battle with Xorn/Jean and Wolverine… and more. They think that THOSE X-Men have followed them… but instead they get some more interesting visitors.

Battle of the Atom Chapter 5

Welcome to Chapter 5! AKA Wolverine and the X-Men #36

Image

Back at Utopia,

Emma Frost ant the Cuckoos are helping the young Jean in her battle against Xorn/Jean Grey (from the future).

Cyclops (from the present) lets Cyclops (from the past know that under the Xorn mask. It’s Jean Grey. No doubt.

Young Cyclops: “No way. That’s your Jean? the dead Jean?

Cyclops: No. That’s no Jean of mine. If I was to guess, I’d say that’s your Jean all grown up. Your young Jean never went back to her own time. She grew up in the future and now she’s…. OLD young Jean. I can’t believe I just said that.

Young Jean seems to be losing.

Wolverine (and Psylocke, Old Deadpool, 2 Beasts, 2 Icemans, Storm, Molly and Xavier’s grandson) show up to confront Cyclopses and everybody. Wolverine points out the youngins on Cyclops’ squad and Cyclops brings up the fact that Wolverine and Henry McCoy brought back Cyclops as a kid- and almost got him wiped out of existence when Kitty Pryde took him to stop Animax.

Image

Young Cyclops shows off his powers.

Storm steps in to stop the melee (which after the conflicts of 2 chapters ago… makes little sense) and says “no more x-men fighting x-men.”

Meanwhile, the X-men still fighting X-men, the cuckoos are failing and Emma along with young Jean is holding strong against Xorn Jean. With a battle cry of: “I will gouge out your eyeballs with diamond fingers, you fiendishly overrated ginger! Why won’t you ever stay dead?!”

Xorn Jean in turn takes a cheap shot at Emma, “Scott will never be yours, so long as there’s a me around.”

The art in these panels for the psychic battle are particularly cool, might I add, light blasting out of everyone’s eyes, characters bleeding while phantom figures send bright blasts at each other.

Emma falls out of the battle and leaves Jeans fighting each other.

Meanwhile-

Young Iceman and Young Beast are researching the future (Young Beast suggests that the future X-Men aren’t who they say they are.) They are also babysitting Shogo (who Jubes dumped on them. Where’s she at?). Magik takes the pair into the future.

Because obviously the solution is MORE TIME TRAVEL.

about this time, Young Jean reads the mind of her future self and decides that it’s time to stop fighting and go home.

Image

(Deadpool hints that the future isn’t what they are saying) and this issue concludes with Magik and co in the future… meeting MORE X-Men.

Battle of the Atom Chapter 4

Jean and Scott are with present day Cyclops (and co) on his island/bunker/secret lair. SHEILD is picking up strange readings because of the X-Men. Agent Blaire rightfully attributes the fluctuations in X-Men activity to Dr. Henry McCoy, who just does whatever he wants whenever he wants. She sends out orders to see WHAT Beast is doing to the time-space continuum and send everyone back to their own era. And make sure the X-Men don’t accidently blow up the moon.

Image

Back at Utopia, Cyclops explains what’ s going on with their visitors (Angel says “Hey”). They “Hive Mind” to see what Jean saw (who the X-Men from the future are). Magik says she’s met them before, this confuses… uh, everyone and then she zaps out of there in a fiery explosion of dragons and skeletons.

In chapter 2 they threw the topic out there, the future X-Men shielded themselves from the other psychics. and they keep saying “You don’t block someone like that unless you are hiding something” and it keeps reminding me of the NSA “scandal” where the US government basically said, “Well, if you aren’t hiding anything, what difference does it make if we’re snooping” this seems to be Jean’s stance.

Image

Back on the PCH where the majority of the X-Men we’ve been following left off. Kitty starts arguing with Storm… then she starts arguing with herself (well, herself from the future), then she argues with Logan and points out how hypocritical everyone is being.

Image

Back at Utopia, Cyclops is trying to decide whether he wants to help his younger self and the teenage version of the love of his life. He decides to help them (shocker!) Emma calls him out on being an egomaniac. Jean (from the future) shows up to take control of the situation and everyones cognitive functions, her younger self is no match …will she be stopped?

Jokes about cosplay and bloggers and message boards.

Still moving too slowly. Poised to have factions moving in different directions, different alliances made.

This was my least favorite so far. On top of the fact that it was a ton of arguing… Kitty seemed to lose some of the self assured assertiveness she showed in the last issue to just arguing and picking fights (and her older self saying “sorry I was ever like this”) maybe she is being naive, but she also trusts Jean and Scott to make the right choice rather than making their decision for them, like any good teacher.

And what happened to those Sentinels? Chapter 1 they were “hounding” the X-Men. no they are all fighting each other in the middle of the PCH and none can be found. Huh?

More SHIELD please!

Jubilee! Where are you? Do vampire stuff!

Battle of the Atom- Chapter 3

(Or Brian Wood’s X-Men #5)

This is the only X-Men series I was reading pre-Battle of the Atom and I had high expectations for this one. The 3 issue starter story arc was amazing, then the last issue was sort of mellowed out, hinting at rifts between the girls but showing them working through their differences and Jubilee shopping with Wolverine.

Image

Where we left off in Battle of the Atom: 3 Sentence recap: Jean and Scott (from the past) are on the run. Beast, Kitty, Xavier’s grandson, Iceman, Deadpool and… Jean are back from the future to help set things right. Wolverine does not approve.

Jean, from the future says that she can’t be without the Xorn mask for more than a few minutes.

Image

Beasts joke about how many jets they made (and how smart they are). Storm tells present day Kitty, Young Bobby and Hank to stay behind. Kitty is annoyed, deservedly so, she’s been kicking ass lately against Arkea in this series and showed her stuff against Animax and asserted herself, trading quips with Cyclops, but she is frequently stuck “babysitting.”

Speaking of babysitting, Jubilee is present, hanging with Shogo and I want her to do vampire stuff!!

Young Jean & Scott are stealing someones laundry (and Scott accidently gets an eye full), they stash their superhero get ups and take a motorcycle.

With all the psychics and telekinetics, Wolverine sniffs out the young fugitives.

Kitty and Rachel have girl talk over Chinese food (superheros: they’re just like us!), neither want to send Rachel and Scott back to the past, they know that means their memories will get wiped (and Jean will become the Phoenix and yada yada). Rachel, coming from the future herself, has a different perspective on wrecking the timeline. SHe thinks that they probably should go back, but it should be their call.

Jean and Scott on the PCH are discussing what they should do. Jean suggests reaching out to the Avengers, Scott says that they are putting reality in danger. (But remember, Jean in present day is DEAD, she doesn’t know it was her under the Xorn mask and NOT going back is her only chance to live and escape her fate, and seriously, Beast, how did you not see that coming.)

Some of the X-kids notice that Kitty and Rachel are gone and comment that they probably died of boredom. Jubes passes them Shogo. One of the bys, his jaw dropped says “I don’t know how to watch a baby!” And Jubilee quips, “Homo superior, dude. Figure it out. Adapt. I did.” I thought this is a great line since women are frequently presented as having some innate baby caregiving knowledge. We don’t. It’s trial and error and advice from people and figuring things out and common sense. Given the need: you will figure it out.

Scott and Jean heart to heart about dying twice, the fact that present day cyclops is going insane when Storm and well, everybody, show up. They try to flee, Deadpool (from the future) shoots out their tires and Beast (prime) tackles the lovebirds. The pair are fighting to get away to no avail… until Kitty and Rachel show up. The rift between Ororo and Rachel grows as they jump in to intervene, but it is Kitty who confronts Ororo.

Arguing between the MANY MANY X-Men ensues (my favorite is Kitty telling off Wolverine, who pulls this “Me… what?”) And then under the confusion… Scott and Jean have escaped (with help from Rachel) and fled to Utopia to get help from present day Cyclops and company).

Image

What I didn’t like: when Jubilee passed off Shogo I thought for sure she was fixing to do some vampire stuff! I want it! I need to know what’s up with the Xorn mask on Jean from the future.

I LOVED Kitty asserting herself. She’s been stepping up a lot lately and Storm “ordering” her to stay behind was crummy. This is sure to ramp up the conflict between Storm and Rachel, rightly so, but they didn’t give Rachel a chance to be okay with this. HOW WAS SHE SUPPOSED TO BE OKAY WITH IT? AND HOW WAS JEAN SUPPOSED TO BE OKAY WITH IT? Beast: for a genius, you’re a real dumb dumb.
